Argentina’s Sofia Martinoli represents Argentine jaguar at Miss Earth 2022

Sofía Martinoli, 23, of Berisso, Buenos Aires, Argentina is one of the 89 candidates of Miss Earth 2022. It is the 22nd edition of the international beauty pageant that advocates for environmental awareness, conservation and social responsibility.

Miss Earth 2022

Representing the Philippines, Baguio City’s Roxanne Baeyens, 25, is Miss Earth-Water 2020. She was second runner-up to Miss Earth 2020 Lindsey Coffey, 30, of the United States, who was crowned in a virtual ceremony on November 29, 2020.

On November 21, 2021, Coffey’s successor Miss Earth 2021 Destiny Wagner, 26, of Belize was also crowned virtually. On November 29, 2022, Wagner will crown her successor at the Okada Manila in Parañaque, Metro Manila, Philippines.

The theme of Miss Earth 2022 is ME Loves Fauna. The 89 candidates are asked to choose an animal native to their respective countries, which will be part of their journey to the crown.

Sofía Martinoli

Martinoli is a cabin crew student. She enjoys reading, dancing and playing hockey.

On July 27, 2022, Martinoli represented Berisso at Miss Earth Argentina 2022 and competed against 13 other candidates at the Empire Theatre in Buenos Aires. She won the title.

If Martinoli makes it to the Top 4 of Miss Earth 2022, she will be the international beauty pageant’s second winner from Argentina. Representing the South American country, Daniela Stucan was crowned Miss Earth-Fire 2001 at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila on October 28, 2001.

Argentine jaguar

CITES Appendix I prohibits all international commercial trade in jaguars or their body parts. Hunting jaguars is prohibited not only in Argentina but also in Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, the United States and Venezuela.

By 2014, two jaguar conservation units in northern Argentina became completely isolated due to deforestation. In July 2022, two jaguar cubs were born in Corrientes, Argentina, the first to be born in the province in 70 years.
